I had joined DIVA (digital, innovation, ventures, and analytics), a digital factory set up by Accenture to re-invent Changi Airport’s passenger experience and its operations. The factory is designed to help Changi Airport Group experiment develop and launch new digital products and services—from conceptualization to delivery.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the travel and aviation industry worldwide was brought to a standstill and within weeks almost 98% of Changi’s footfall disappeared. The management needed support that was prompt and innovative to be able to quickly mobilize operational teams to build new digital products starting with improving safety for passengers and employees.
One of the products was Where2Clean and I was onboarded to the team during the development phase.
Cleaning supervisors had to manually take note of flight arrival and departure times at the start of their shifts, to plan their cleaning schedule and manpower allocation. The challenge of scheduling by hand is that it does not consider any flight timing changes and is not efficient.
Our high-level goals were to create a platform that utilised real-time flight information to plan on-demand cleaning thereby
- Minimizing the effort of the supervisor to plan and schedule
- Improve the visibility of cleaning supervisors on the overall operations
- Making efficient use of manpower and resources
- Ensure quality of cleanliness

Without breaching the NDA, the overview allowed cleaning supervisors to see which gates (and belts) required cleaning, and to update their statuses as cleaning was done in real time. The “time left” column indicated the amount of time left available for cleaning before the next arriving or departing flight took place at that gate.
Some initiatives that I implemented include color coding of actions, and using of icons to display statuses rather than overcrowding the overview with text and numbers.
The design must be intentionally simple due to the large amount of information that the cleaning supervisor needs to process. In addition, the cleaning supervisors may not be proficient in English. An example is reducing the cognitive load on users by using icons and colours to minimize the use of text and numbers.
In terms of information architecture, gates that required action were organizing at the top, using a maroon text to indicate urgency but not bright red which indicates danger or emergency. I had also added filters to allow cleaning supervisors to control what they wanted to see as there were too many gates to be shown all at once.
I wish I could show more instances of where that took place, but the only screen that was shown to the public was the one above.
I left the team before the launch but guessing it appeared on the public case study, it must have been successful to a certain extent.
According to my own judgment:
- Multi-language functionality for cleaning supervisors whose first language isn’t English.
- Better use of visual hierarchy to show column headers
- Better use of contrast to show divide between rows
With ‘Where2Clean’, cleaning supervisors are now able to utilise real-time flight information to better plan and adjust their manpower accordingly and move towards on-demand cleaning.
There are more than 50 gate hold rooms (GHR) across Changi Airport’s two operating terminals. ‘Where2Clean’ enables cleaning supervisors to see the list of GHRs available for cleaning, as well as how long the GHRs are available for in between flights, based on real-time flight info. This helps the supervisors to better plan their manpower to cater to on-demand cleaning.
My first official UI/UX design internship, I learnt a lot from my supervisor and working in an actual team with developers. Designing for the sake of designing is a lot different from designing in a way that made a developer’s life easier. Creating design systems that allowed myself to work efficiently, but also allowing developers to work efficiently by understanding our design. I had also learnt from other UI / UX designers on the importance of being pixel-perfect and documenting work.

Student Club | Publicity & Publications Subcommittee
As the Assistant Publicity Officer of the NTU Runners' Club, I had undertaken several design related projects. Starting with the official rebranding by creating a style guide for our club. From there, we used the style guide to redesign our logo, club shirts and social media posts.
Some notable accomplishments included designing collaterals for ruNTUgether and Race Bingo, university-wide events that the club had planned and executed while also advertising and publicizing our sponsors.
During weekly official run days, we Assistant Publicity Officers were in charge of photography and also managing the social media accounts. Additionally, we had the responsibility of leading groups of 5 (limited due to COVID) on the runs.

The magazine was published university-wide.

Proposed a project “Resumption” which aimed to reduce waste in hotels and raise awareness on responsible consumption in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Led team comprising former members of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) eTournament (see resume) from Taiwan and Hong Kong to ideate and create a sustainable development project lasting up to 6 months and funded for HKD50,000 . Our proposal for "Resumption" had garnered the approval of the reviewing committee over the other submitted proposals. The project was discontinued due to the Hong Kong riots and COVID pandemic which shut down tourism in Hong Kong and effectively stopped our proposal from being implementable.
